Asien habe ich mit einer Ausnahme (China) bislang nur gedanklich (B\u00fccher) und medial (Fernsehen) „bereist“.<\/p>\n

Heute k\u00f6nnen wir uns kaum vorstellen, welche Umw\u00e4lzungen\u00a0die Reise Vasco da Gamas um 1500 im damaligen Europa zur Folge hatten. Die reichen venezianischen Kaufleute und viele andere Profiteure der Seidenstrasse bekamen auf einmal die Konkurrenz des wirtschaftlich g\u00fcnstigeren und schnelleren Seeweges um das Kap der guten Hoffnung zu sp\u00fcren. Die Portugiesen agierten \u00fcber Jahrhunderte mit Geschick und seefahrerischem K\u00f6nnen im Kampf um die globalen Ressourcen. F\u00fcr uns ist heute in jedem Supermarkt vieles wie selbstverst\u00e4ndlich zu Niedrigpreisen erh\u00e4ltlich. Damals mussten diese Produkte unter gro\u00dfen Anstrengungen auf Kamelen oder unsicheren Frachtschiffen aus Holz nach Europa transportiert werden.<\/p>\n

Das hier dargestellte Schiffsmodell weist geschichtlich in diese Zeit der Entdeckung des Seewegs nach Indien durch Vasco da Gama im Jahr 1499. Dieses Datum findet sich auf einem Segel des Gro\u00dfmasts. Der Schiffsttyp mit drei Masten ist eine Karacke. Ein kleinerer Typ wird als Nao bezeichnet. Im ausgehenden Mittelalter zu Beginn der Neuzeit waren diese Schiffe sehr h\u00e4ufig. Vasco da Gama und auch Christoph Kolumbus bereisten mit diesem Schiffstyp die Weltmeere.
